This stunning 7,145m peak lies in the Upper Khumbu region of Nepal. It is a fantastic mountaineering objective and is situated amongst some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in the world. We climb the mountain by following the South West Ridge, which is a continuation of the ridge above Kala Patar.
The peak straddles the Nepalese Tibetan border, allowing us to see the great contrast between the arid Tibetan Plateau to the north and west and the white snow covered peaks of Nepal to the south and east.
The views into the Western Cwm of Everest are simply superb. The technically difficult sections of the climb (mostly between the first and second camps) will be equipped with fixed rope. The summit day is long and physically demanding with a lot of exposure.
ITINERARY – Days
1-2 International flight to Kathmandu, where you will be met and driven to the hotel in the city.
3-4 We fly to Lukla and walk to Namche Bazaar.
5 Rest day in Namche Bazaar. This is primarily to aid acclimatisation, but the town is a fascinating place to explore and to hunt for souvenirs.
6-11 Continue the ‘walk in’ until we finally reach base camp above the settlement of Gorak Shep. The camp is on a flat grassy spot beneath the buttress at approximately 5,300m.
12-22 These are our climbing days. We will place two camps on the peak itself at 5,900m and 6,400m respectively, before making our summit bid.
23 Return to base camp and start to pack up to leave.
24-26 Return to Lukla.
27 The return flight to Kathmandu is early in the morning, which leaves the rest of the day free.
28 An entire day free in Kathmandu.
29-30 You will be driven out to the airport in good time to catch the International flight home.
The trip is ideally suited to strong experienced climbers who want to climb the peak in its own right, or to use the trip to gain experience with the idea of going on to higher peaks in the future.
Hotel Tibet in Kathmandu (one night at start of trip, two at the end). Lodges on the trail and tents at the base camp and while on the mountain.
